The Evolution of Aesthetic Treatments: From Ancient Practices to Modern Innovations

By Martin Kinsella on October 21st, 2024

Aesthetic treatments have been a part of human history for centuries. There has been a long desire to enhance a person’s beauty and maintain a youthful appearance. From rituals of ancient civilisations to the technologies of today, the evolution reflects the ongoing fascination of self care and appearance.

Ancient

Aesthetic treatments can be traced back to ancient civilisations such as Egypt, Greece and China. Natural ingredients and rituals were used to maintain youthful skin and enhance features. Cleopatatra’s milk baths and the use of herbal remedies in Chinese medicine are early examples of our need for aesthetic enhancement.

Medieval

During the medieval period, aesthetic treatments were influenced by natural resources and cultural beliefs. Herbs, oils and honey are just some of the items used to help skin issues and enhance beauty. Beauty was often linked to health and hygiene, although these were basic compared to modern standards.

Industrial

The industrial revolution brought advancements in science and technology, impacting aesthetic treatments. This era saw the early stages of plastic surgery techniques as well as a growing interest in cosmetic enhancements. The Industrial Revolution marked a period of scientific advancement and refinement.

However, plastic surgery can be traced back to 800 B.C. Indian physicians were starting to perform reconstructive surgery using skin grafts.

20th Century

The 20th century marked a turning point in the evolution of aesthetic treatments. WIth the development of science and technology, new methods and products emerged. There was also a development of  synthetic ingredients, advanced surgical techniques and an understanding of dermatology.

Botox was introduced in the late 20th century. It was initially used for medical purposes but soon became a popular aesthetic treatment. There was a focus on personalised and targeted treatments. Skincare products also improved to address specific skin concerns.

The 20th century set the stage for modern aesthetic treatments.

Modern Innovations

Moving to modern day, aesthetic treatment continues to evolve with an emphasis on minimally invasive treatments. The rise of non-surgical procedures, such as dermal fillers, are a preferred treatment with shorter recovery time.

As well as this, artificial intelligence has helped improve aesthetic treatments. They can be used to customise skincare solutions and predict treatments based on your needs.
